125 years

September 23, 1896

A meeting of the waterworks and the city council’s road and fire committee was held yesterday evening to discuss the issue of flushing water hydrants with less damage to the roads. It was decided to use a copper connector to direct the water into the gutters instead of letting it flow on the streets.

A 17-year-old boy from Niles, Michigan reportedly slowly dying from cigarette smoking. He has been smoking three to five packs a day for almost two years and now longs for them on his deathbed. The poison in the cigarettes has caused his skin to take on a greenish hue.

100 years

September 23, 1921

A home for the elderly and children is likely to be approved by the Ohio Synod of the Presbyterian Church when it meets in Cambridge next month. In all likelihood, a large farm will be accepted that was offered as the location for the new home.

The Sidney Kiwanis ball team traveled to Springfield yesterday afternoon to play a second leg with the Springfield Kiwanis. The game was played but the exact results could not definitely be known by the local team on their return. The Springfield team was believed to have had 17 runs in total, and it could have been more while the Sidney boys had none.

75 years

September 23, 1945

The reorganization of the First National Bank board of directors was completed yesterday afternoon when WR Anderson rose to the post of President filling the vacancy created by the recent death of JC Cummins. William F. Kingseed has been named vice president of the board and Taylor Cummins has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the board.

An important deal was made this week in Botkins with LC Opperman of Kenton, who bought the assets of the Schurr furniture business in that village. He plans to continue operations at the same location.

President Truman today called for Henry Wallace’s resignation as Secretary of Commerce following a “fundamental conflict” over foreign policy.

50 years

23rd September 1971

The Pittsburgh Pirates broke their champagne in St. Louis, and the rich scent was seductive enough to intoxicate the San Francisco Giants in distant Houston.

Pittsburgh claimed their second straight Eastern Division title in the National League by beating the runner-up St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 on Wednesday night.

A committee hiring new doctors for Shelby County needs money to fund an extensive recruiting effort.

The plans are not final, but the committee is considering the Shelby County Medical Services Corp. to found a provisional name, according to the optician Dr. John Beigel, group chairman, Sidney. In order to be able to compete successfully, a company is required that provides the money for the entry of new doctors, said Dr. Beigel. The new doctors are expected to repay the company later, he added.

September 23, 1995

Sidney and Minster top their respective regions in the first part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s computer rankings, which determine playoff participants.

Sidney has the third highest score in the state, more than two of the leaders in Division I and the highest of any team in Division II. The only teams to score more points after the first four weeks are Lakewood St. Edward and Fairmont, both leaders of Division I.
