UoN students cry lazily over fee increase

The fee increase proposed by the University of Nairobi has caused a sensation among students and parents who want to put the move on hold due to the current financial constraints.

However, the university’s vice chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama defended the increase, saying it was aimed at enhancing the learning experience.

The increase increased fees for some courses by as much as 147 percent.

Self-catering students seeking postgraduate degrees in courses such as communication and business administration will part ways with Ksh 680,000 for a two-year program of approximately Ksh 275,000, an increase of 147 percent.

Medical courses for government sponsored students for medical courses from Ksh 26,500 to Ksh 59,000 have increased 123 percent, while their self-sponsored fellow students will cough Ksh 640,000 from Ksh 445,000.

Those studying business, economics, and law as parallel students part with about 1 million Ksh for the four years, an increase of 70 percent.

Increments that Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama said are aimed at improving services and affect only new students.

He said that the implementation of the differentiated unit cost model resulted in state taxes being deducted at universities.

In addition to reviewing the fee structure, the university has also restructured its operations, abolished some offices and merged functions in order to save costs.
