Lookout Santa Cruz is looking for a detail-oriented and creative digital producer & storyteller for our dynamic team. The producer will work with our editorial and sales teams to fulfill Lookout’s mission: to develop a new local news and information model for the 2020s that enriches audiences, empowers the community and generates revenue. The goal: to create the best possible user experience on site and to help tell stories in a creative, captivating way that is only possible in a digital landscape.

The producer focuses on three key results:

  • Owns the maintenance and day-to-day programming of the Lookout Santa Cruz website through the Graphene content management system to ensure the website is running smoothly and is optimized for the best user experience Owns the daily management of third-party providers.
  • Works side by side with editors to help create data visualizations and use interactive tools like Infogram, Second Street, KnightLab, and others to empower and differentiate Lookout’s storytelling.
  • Works with the sales team to build a high quality user experience on content marketing stories, citizen and marketing partner pages, and interactive modules that customers love.

This versatile role requires attention to detail and creativity, with an emphasis on digital storytelling that is optimized for mobile and desktop use. The successful candidate builds on Lookout’s editorial mission and intent to use interactive tools for modern, explanatory storytelling. What will you do

The focus of the Digital Producer & Storyteller is on making the Lookout Santa Cruz website sing to ensure that the website and content are visually dynamic and optimized for a good digital user experience.

More accurate:

  • Works with editors on a daily basis and works with correspondents to create data visualizations and help them use interactive tools that support daily storytelling through tools like Infogram, KnightLab, Second Street and more.
  • Provides and creates quizzes, story maps, interactive timelines, games, and other engaging, interactive content that goes beyond the headlines and provides context and depth to users.
  • It’s convenient to dig into thick data sets to distill and display important context-building information in digestible ways to aid storytelling.
  • Provides technical support for both virtual and live events and assists in recording, cutting and uploading event videos to our YouTube channel and on-site. Is familiar with audio and video editing if necessary.
  • Works with the sales team to build a high quality user experience on articles, pages and interactive modules to showcase marketing partners, citizen partners / groups and promoted content.
  • Assists the revenue team in creating and sending promotional and marketing materials to our robust mailing list and segmented audiences.
  • Owns the administration, maintenance, and day-to-day programming of the Lookout Santa Cruz website through the Graphene CMS. Tasks include creating pages, sections, and advertising modules, among others.
  • Helps manage third-party providers including Lookout’s calendar of events, real estate modules, newsletter services, and more.
  • Helps with the design of Lookout’s product roadmap and evaluates and researches new services from third-party providers and technology partners – taking into account the core task of Lookout.

Minimum qualification and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience as a digital producer, web developer, or digital storyteller in a news company or related field.
  • A proven ability to create fast, high quality infographics and interactive elements to take traditional storytelling to the next level.
  • Experience with content management systems such as Arc, WordPress, WCM, Lakana or others. Experience in managing the backend systems of a website and knowledge of programming are an asset.
  • Superior creative, organizational and communication skills with a focus on Lookout’s mission of reader-centric journalism and an optimized user experience.
