Not everyone who lives in Monterey’s Pasadera Condominium plays golf. Those who do enjoy the signature course designed by Jack Nicklaus, which spans what early Spanish missionaries called Rancho Laguna Seca. Steinbeck saw it as the “willows of heaven”. The backdrop, coupled with an alchemy of hacienda-style and Moorish architecture, has proven to be an inspiring backdrop for a variety of celebrations and events, including the Concours in Pasadera.
Chaired by Pasadera-based and car enthusiast Rick Barnett, owner of Monterey Motorsports, the third annual concours is sponsored by Porsche this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the brand’s successive victories in a Porsche 917 at Le Mans to celebrate Daytona 1970 and 1971.
“Ferrari dominated Le Mans from 1960 to 1965,” said Barnett, “followed by Ford’s four-year winning streak, interrupted by Porsche’s victories at Daytona and Le Mans.”
The Concours in Pasadera starts on August 6th at 2 p.m. for club members, an hour later for ticket holders and ends at 6 p.m. domestic modified cars, pre-war classic cars from 1941 and earlier, commercial and competition vehicles, and a century of classic and contemporary motorcycles from 1920 to 2020.
This year’s renowned jury includes the Ferrari specialist and owner of Coppa Bella Motors Steve Fremgen; Don Colman, former program director of the GT-40 Mark I, which won Le Mans in 1968/69; John Lackner, vice president of operations, marketing, and sales for Exotic Autoworks; Ferrari specialist Daryl Brown; as well as deputy judges: the former manufacturer, mechanic and crew chief Peter Miles, whose father drove a GT40 at Le Mans; and Danny Sullivan, who has 17 wins in the CART Indy World Series, including the 1985 Indianapolis 500.
In a special way, the Concours audience is invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award by evaluating a unique class of Modern Classics from 1990 to 2020 that shows design and technical influences on cars of the future. While every car that wins its class will receive a Tiffany Award, the Modern Classics winner will be honored with a uniquely designed Tiffany award. In addition, the Best of Show winner selected by the jury receives the coveted silver “Tiffany Cupâ€.
The Pasadera Concours has also invited selected automobile exhibitors from 2019 to return with their cars to a special “Alumni Vehicle†exhibition.
The Concours will also feature a special display of rare Hot Wheels collectible toy cars. The Hot Wheels brand, founded in 1968, has reportedly sold more than six billion cars, more than the sales of the “Big Three” manufacturers General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Ford Motor Company combined. Despite being just toys, tiny Hot Wheels cars can be worth thousands of dollars.
“I still have around 200 Hot Wheels in their collector’s boxes,” says classic car collector David von Gompertz from Carmel. “Motorists start out very young with an affordable collection. Hot Wheels are fueling the idea of ​​what it would be like to have cars that are modeled on real production cars. Every child’s dream is to make their Hot Wheels a reality. And some of me have it. “
Collectibles and donation proceeds
A concours would not be complete without a collector’s poster reminding of the event.
