The Victorian government has lifted bans on public toilets in outdoor sports facilities, including golf and tennis courts, after widespread backlash.

Indoor and outdoor toilets need to be cleaned twice a day and people need to check in with QR codes. The indoor facilities, including the clubhouse, changing rooms and bistros, will remain closed.

“These changes, which go into effect on Monday, October 4th at 11:59 PM, mean the toilets can be opened while keeping personal contact and authorized worker presence in outdoor recreational facilities to a hard minimum “, It says in a statement from the Ministry of Health.

Royal Melbourne Golf Club captain Andrew Kirby called the restrictions a “joke” last week and disappointed many golfers after their initial excitement about the reopening.

“I know the guys can do number one in the trees, but there are a lot of women playing,” Kirby told 3AW.

“We’ve been through this opening and closing and opening so many times that you might think they’d understand a little better. To be honest, I think the problem I am seeing is too much micro-regulation … maybe there was miscommunication or something was misunderstood, but we have staff there, we have a lot of women playing, we have People with illnesses – they have to use the toilets. “
