2021 was the first full year the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent as private individuals. As a fan of sleek, minimalist fashion since her actress days, some elements of Markle’s wardrobe have remained. The Duchess will always love a monochrome moment, delicate jewelry and eye-catching outerwear. Even so, she now has room to experiment, and that makes her fashion for 2021 interesting. During her pregnancy with her daughter Lilibet, she decided on innovative prints and soft colors. Specifically, she performed at Spotify’s Stream On event in February in an Oscar de la Renta peplum-hem sleeveless dress adorned with a juicy citrus print. As one of the many celebrities who encourage vaccinations during the VaxLive event in May, she provided vital information while wearing a peppy pink and flowered Carolina Herrera shirt dress.
After the pregnancy, Markle went a step further and traveled to New York City with Harry in September for her first round of public solo engagements. The outfits she packed were reminiscent of the secret wealth luxury preferred by style-conscious CEOs and world leaders. After Markle abandoned gilded regal splendor, he was renamed Max Mara with purple Loro Piana separations and sleek coats. Of course, her evolution in fashion enabled moments of playfulness, like the Valentino shift dress she wore to grace the stage at the Global Citizen Live concert in Central Park. Short and crisp with trimmed sleeves and 3D-printed details on the collar and hems, it is reminiscent of the Mod Minis by André Courrèges and Mary Quant.
It goes without saying that actors and musicians play around with fancy fashion, but during her years as working royals, Meghan kept things subdued. Even though she wore her fascinators and tea-length dresses expertly, it was fun to watch her shift gears and embrace new ideas. Fittingly, her defining moment came in 2021 when she wore a young designer breathing new life into a historic home. To attend the Intrepid Museum’s annual Salute to Freedom Gala in November, Markle glanced again at Wes Gordon from Herrera, who was creating a dazzling red dress for the occasion. With its deep neckline, revealing slit and eye-catching crimson color, the dress was a real eye-catcher, suitable for a purely American duchess who bravely goes her own way.
