Iris Duplantier Rideau, 84, the first owner of a black winery in the United States, received the prestigious Pioneer and Legend Award at the Atlanta Hue Society’s Roses and Rosé Awards Brunch at the Wine and Culture Fest in late August.

The festival was conceived by the founder and sommelier of the Hue Society, Tahiirah Habibi.

Born in New Orleans in 1936, Rideau founded Rideau Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley in the early 1990s.

A Rhone-inspired house with an estate vineyard, Rideau wines included Syrah, Grenache, Roussanne and Marsanne.

Although Rideau sold their homonymous winery and winery in 2016, it’s in a historic adobe from the late 1880s.

Today Rideau is busy promoting her memoir, One Life Between Two Worlds: From White to Black.

In it, Rideau describes her childhood in New Orleans in the Depression Era, her exodus from Jim Crow South, her early years as a single mother in Los Angeles and her illustrious career in the world of politics and finance in Los Angeles.

Solvang’s Coast Range announces new menu and reservation system

One of the hottest new restaurants in the Santa Ynez Valley, Coast Range, will open its indoor dining room with a new menu on September 24th.

Restaurant Reservations went live on September 17th for reservations and the first available reserved seats will be on September 24th.

Since opening in April, the restaurant has seen a spate of dinners, many of which have been waiting for tables during dinner.

The Coast Range & Vaquero Bar’s new lunch menu will be slightly different and similar to what the team of chefs / owners used before the indoor dining room opened.

Seat reservations can now be made via https://www.coastrange.restaurant/.

Coast Range is located in 1635 Mission Dr. (the old Mandarian Touch restaurant). Opening times are lunch, 12 noon to 4 pm; Dinner, 5pm to 10pm; and Vaquero Bar, from noon to midnight, Thursday to Monday. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Gleason Family Vineyards announces Peter Cham as head chef

Chef Peter Cham has the. connected Gleason family vineyards (Roblar Winery and Vineyards, Refugio Ranch Vineyards and Royal Oaks Wines) as Head Chef and Head of Culinary Operations.

As part of Roblar Winery and Vineyards’ hospitality and private events, Chef Cham creates seasonal appetizer menus using fresh produce and herbs grown just steps away on the property’s Roblar organic farm.

Guests will find a variety of dishes, including smoked salmon eggs with pickled shallots, crispy capers, chives, and espelette peppers; Wood-fired forest mushroom pizza with confit garlic and kale pesto; or charred Roblar Farm broccoli with Bagna Càuda, grilled lemon, Parmesan and Aleppo pepper.

These bites will be available Friday through Sunday along with Roblar’s wine selection.

Also new is the winery’s “Birds ‘n’ Bubbles” on Thursdays, where chef Cham’s famous roast chicken is served alongside the sparkling Blanc de Blanc Roblar and brunch every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cham is from Santa Barbara and grew up in a Cambodian household that viewed food as a means of family reunification. In 2006, he went to San Francisco to study and research the culinary arts and worked at Radius Restaurant & Café, a food company in keeping with his own kitchen ethos. Three years after joining Radius, Cham became head chef. To strengthen his skills, he also trained at other iconic and Michelin-starred facilities in San Francisco such as the Coi Restaurant, Quince, and Fifth Floor.

In 2016 Chef Cham moved to Finch & Fork Restaurant at the Kimpton Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara, where he started as an Executive Sous Chef and eventually became Executive Chef.

In addition to his culinary activities, Cham is an avid nature lover and cycling enthusiast. As a long-time participant in the “Chefs Cycle for No Kid Hungry”, he has raised more than 50,000 US dollars to end hunger in children.

Roblar Winery and Vineyards is located on Roblar Ave. 3010 where Roblar and Highway 154 meet. The tasting room is open for tasting every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations are required.

The winemaker is Max Marshak and the deputy winemaker is Kat Neenan.

Zaca Creek tavern to celebrate bourbon during the weekend event

the Tavern on Zaca Creek Buellton will continue the opening ceremony of Bourbon Heritage Month this month with tastings on Friday and Saturday, September 24th and 25th. You can see Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Basil Hayden and Baker’s Bourbons.

The weekend consists of various packages that include tastings, seminars, cocktails and / or dinner, and a special room rate of USD 200 per guest for both nights applies.

On Friday, September 24th The tasting and the seminar followed by dinner will take place in the tavern from 6 to 7 p.m. Cost: $ 125 per person.

On Saturday nights, the Kentucky Bluegrass Cocktail Lesson is held at the Falls from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by dinner at 7:00 PM. Cost: $ 95 per person. All fees do not include taxes or tips.
