On Tuesday June 6th, A-list celebrities gathered for the opening ceremony of the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival. Every year, the star-studded event on the French Riviera presents a series of unforgettable moments of beauty – and as it turns out, this time it was no different. Case in point: Jodie Foster’s Cannes makeup 2021, achieved by celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman with Charlotte Tilbury products. Fortunately, the glowing look (which was accompanied by her luxurious Givenchy shift dress) is surprisingly easy to recreate and the ideal summer makeup for a subtle but really pretty effect.

“It’s funny, there are certain women who look more beautiful the less makeup you put them on, and Jodie is like that,” Freedman tells TZR on the phone. “I’m just trying to make it a little livelier.” In fact, he went for a dewy look with no makeup makeup on at Foster, who this year is the Palme D’Or Honor Bearer for the film festival. “I wanted it to feel a little juicy in France’s Riveria, so we gave it up [her makeup] a golden, peach-colored glow, ”he explains.

The makeup artist reveals that the secret to the shelf life of products during a long event like this one (especially in summer) is to choose products with highly effective formulas that are touted as “matte” and / or “long-lasting”. “These matt foundations [like Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Foundation] that are so popular right now can be a great trick [to help it stay put all day], “he explains. He also adds that using a wet eyeshadow (as opposed to dry, straight from the pan) discolors the skin and in turn prevents the color from smearing or wearing off.” For the lips, I love make a mat and add something on top, ”he says, which also adds a pop of color that lasts all evening.

Below is Freedman’s step-by-step guide on how to achieve Jodie Foster’s Cannes makeup look 2021. Make sure you are in stock with all Charlotte Tilbury products too.

Dewy complexion

“With Jodie, I first made a very pure moisturizer [using Charlotte’s Magic Serum Crystal Elixir and the Magic Cream]and that just prepares it, ”he explains. “And because her skin tends to be dry while it’s still dewy [from the moisturizer] I used the Airbrush Flawless Foundation with the brush all over the place. I find if you do it while the skin is a little dewy with the moisturizer, it blends it together [to create a glowy look]In addition to the skincare products, he applied Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow Face Primer – which he mixes with foundation when not using the moisturizer trick – to prime her complexion.

As it turns out, Freedman likes to apply the foundation everywhere from the neck to the eyelids. “What I find is [by doing this], you will be using less concealer, ”he says. “Concealers are great for dodging things, but they have a thicker consistency.” But that doesn’t mean he won’t be using that particular product – in fact, his goal is the brand’s Magic Away Concealer. “I just put concealer in your eye socket, right there where it’s dark.” Next he went in and corrected it with the concealer where necessary. “When that’s done, I just apply a touch of eye cream or some sort of moisturizer and do it where the crow’s feet are.” To top it off, Freedman finished off with a light powdered powder with Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless finish.

Add color to the skin

After finishing Foster’s foundation, the next step was blushing. “I used the Cheek to Chic in Ecstasy, which is a great little compactness because it has two nuances – there’s a peach and a light highlighter,” explains Freedman. “So you can mix them together, just use the peach as a color or dip in the middle and just make more highlighter.” His take on the event: whirl them all together on a fluffy brush and apply it to Foster’s apples up to your temples and then Stroke across her forehead to the bridge of her nose and down her neck and onto her chin.

After the blush, it went dead with the brand’s Hollywood Superstar Glow Highlighter. “It’s an oversized champagne highlight powder,” says the make-up artist about the product. While he says liquid highlighters are fine for everyday use, he prefers to use a powder formula for a red carpet event. So he applied the powder highlighter to the actor’s cheeks and finally added a bit on the browbones and around her tear duct to lighten the eye.

Cool shadows

“The eye make-up that I like to do is very diffuse,” Freedman explains his characteristic aesthetic. For this special look, he decided on the Pillow Talk Instant Eye Palette. “Because I did a peach lip and cheek, I thought let’s do a cooler eyeshadow but still in the neutral and brown tones.” First he stroked the entire eye area with a mid-tone brown. “I use a medium-sized brush on the lid and lash line,” he explains. “It’s almost like a dewy, faint smoky eye.” Next he went around Foster’s lash line with a shimmering brown shadow on a wet brush. “Because it shimmers a little, it doesn’t look hard or flat.”

After finishing the first round of the shadow, Freedman used Charlotte Tilbury’s The Feline Flick Liquid Liner. “It only has this little felt-tip pen that you can puncture and paint,” he notes. Once the liner dried, he went back in using the same shimmery brown shade on a stiffer brush to fade out the black liner.

As it turns out, Freedman only applied Charlotte Tilbury’s mascara to the upper lashes, not the lower. “I really wanted the darkness and intensity to be just on top,” he says. “I still put the liner there, but I don’t really darken the lashes just because it gives that lift, that illusion and that drama in pictures.” And to peek at them Really Pop, he put a few individual Ardell lashes in the corner of his eye.

“Jodie’s browbones are full, so she doesn’t really like touching them,” Freedman adds, explaining that he lightly applied Charlotte Tilbury’s Brow Lift Pencil and Brow Fix Gel. “Whatever is there, I’ll just make it a little livelier.”

Subtle pout

According to Freedman, Foster has fine “kitten lips,” as he calls them. “She’s a bit like a Celine Dion – [because with] Celine Dion, you never really see a bold lip. ”For the red carpet, the make-up artist filled her pout with Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Medium Lip Pencil. “That was basically the color of her lips,” he says. “Then I just iced it over with the champagne-diamond shine.”

Even if your invitation to the Cannes Film Festival got lost in the mail this year, this celebrity-recognized makeup look can be tried out for any dinner or work event on the calendar throughout the summer. Think of it as Jodie Foster-approved.
