Design recipes: closet envy | Lifestyles

When it comes to cabinets, organization is often paramount. But where do you start?

There is a mindset that everything should have its place. Do you have small items that you fear might be lost? Put them in decorative boxes rather than loose on shelves. Do you have items that don’t work well on hangers? Create slots so they can be folded neatly. Here are some top tips for creating a functional and inviting closet.

DOS

• Use boxes and containers to store small items.

• Color code your closet by combining similar colors and patterns.

• Integrate narrow or supple clothes hangers to create more space.

NOTHING

• Do not keep any items in your closet that you have not worn for at least a year. Remove the items that are no longer needed or carried.

• If possible, do not mix clothes from different seasons in the same closet. If you have enough storage space, try storing seasonal items in your closet.

• Don’t design your closet until you have made an inventory of what you have and a plan of how your closet will work. Otherwise, you might end up with a closet that isn’t fully maximized for use.
