When Google announced Android 12 earlier this year and unveiled the best Android 12 features, the tech giant announced that the Material You-based theme system was coming to Pixel phones first. Since then a report on XDA developer indicated in September that Material You will go open source with Android 12L. Now a commit has been made in Material Components GitHub by software developer Pranav Pandey (via Mishaal Rahman) reveals a list of OEMs that will support the wallpaper-based theme engine in Android 12.

List of OEMs that support dynamic theme colors under Android 12

As Mishaal Rahman mention, that in his tweets, What could essentially change here is the color palettes you would get from the theming system. While you’d still get dynamic colors, the exact color code might be different if you compare it to a Pixel phone with the same wallpaper.

If the GitHub commit is something to watch out for, these are the OEMs who are implementing Dynamic Colors (Material You-like Wallpaper Theming Engine) in their Android 12 custom skins:

  • Oppo
  • Realme
  • OnePlus
  • Vivo
  • Xiaomi
  • Motorola
  • Itel
  • Tecno Mobile Limited
  • Infinix Mobility Limited
  • HMD Global
  • Spicy
  • Sony
  • TCL
  • Lenovo
  • Google

As you may have noticed by now, Samsung is a notable omission from this list alongside other OEMs like Asus and Honor. That’s pretty strange considering the company has already implemented a wallpaper-based theming system in One UI 4.0 Beta, as we recently discovered in our recap of the best OneUI 4.0 features. Does that mean One UI doesn’t support the material component library that apps rely on for design in Android 12? We’ll have to wait and find out.
