Facebook (now renamed to Meta) has a new VR headset in the works, but it’s not a replacement for that Quest 2. Rather, think of it as a more expensive, forward-looking Pro model. With the developer-oriented Connect conference, amid general news about the company’s plans for a cross-device metaverse and Next generation data glasses (and a Change of name as the parent company) CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced hardware codenamed Project Cambria that will have improved mixed reality, face tracking, and more compact optics.

The new headset is not seen as a replacement for the company’s annual one Oculus Quest 2. Instead, it will likely be a more expensive experiment aimed at advancing new sensor technologies for VR and mixed reality, and perhaps acting as a bridge to where the company with non-existent AR glasses wants to go next.
The news comes in a week that Facebook has already faced allegations that it is putting profits over the safety of its users, along with one Internal document cache who hold the social network responsible for upholding hate speech, misinformation, human trafficking, and other harmful content.
