Brock Huard’s takeaway on new Seahawks DC Clint Hurtt

The Seahawks officially transitioned to defensive coordinator last week and announced that Clint Hurtt was promoted from defensive line coach to replace Ken Norton Jr., who was released in January after four seasons as Seattle’s DC.

Hurtt made the rounds later in the week, first in an introductory press conference and then Thursday in an interview with 710 ESPN Seattle’s Wyman and Bob, to offer insight into his priorities for defending the Seahawks after a disappointing 7-10 season give.

Mike Salk, who hosts 710 ESPN Seattle’s Mike Salk Show Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., was vocal about his appreciation for what Hurtt had to say and the enthusiasm he showed while doing it. On Friday, however, he shared his recording with his longtime radio partner.

Salk: The new DC Clint Hurtt is exactly what Seahawks fans have been asking for

Brock Hurda former NFL quarterback and current color commentator for FOX Sports, discussed what came to him from Hurtt during the week and boiled down to how Hurtt made his point without overshadowing his predecessor.

“What I liked is that he didn’t bury anything (everything the Seahawks did on defense under previous coaches),” Huard said. “I think a lot of times new coaches come along and they take that opportunity – ‘We’ve got to do this’ and ‘We’ve got to fix this’ and ‘This is broken’ and ‘We’re going to change that.’ The outgoing Ken Norton really wasn’t shot at.”

Salk chimed in: “No, but it’s pretty obvious what was going on in the past didn’t make any sense. They didn’t have to fire any shots. The shots were fired for them.”

Huard agreed and then gave his insight into what Hurtt said specifically about the defense.

“I think he showed some maturity in that moment and just said, ‘You know, we’re going to be completely different and we’re going to be in attack mode and we’re going to be aggressive.’ And ‘We’re going to combine that at the end with some actual reporting that you have to do – mix and mix and match and camouflage.’ Everything you need to do in today’s NFL to slow down the elite of elite quarterbacks.”

Huard joins The Mike Salk Show daily at 7:45 p.m., and you can also hear him weekly on the Brock and Salk Podcast. Listen to Friday’s full discussion in the final segment of the podcast at this link or in the player below.
