Since the creation of her lover Chalk paint® 1990, English décor connoisseur Annie Sloan has conquered the hearts of the do-it-yourselfers on both sides of the pond with their uncomplicated paintwork and their wonderfully unobtrusive interpretation of interiors and furniture restoration. It’s no surprise, then, that the Victorian-era townhouse she has called her home in Oxford, England for two decades – just a few minutes’ drive from Chalk Paint® HQ – embodies a carefree approach to jewelry collected over the years . Sentimental objects and scrap finds from around the world fill every corner and remind Annie and husband David Manuel of a life well lived and a time they spend with loved ones – especially their three sons Henry, Felix and Hugo. “It’s something that just grew organically,” says Annie of the look. “I always mixed everything.”

While Anne and David’s decorating choices are a cheerfully eclectic mix, there’s one continuous line that connects the spaces in the house: color – and plenty of it. Annie coated the walls and shelves in a wide variety of shades of her own and even found time to add a freehand wall art or two.

If you’ve always wondered how the design icon furnishes her personal living space, now is the time to stop by and have a look around. Read on to take a look at all of the cozy nooks and crannies of Annie Sloan’s charming Oxford townhouse – and the specific hues of her own color she used in each room.

Sweet love seat

Located across from the fireplace in the upstairs living room, this embroidered two-seater sofa was unwittingly bought without a seat cushion. Annie created her own, complete with hand-stenciled floral designs that were then stacked on a selection of throw pillows. The center is from Pendleton, while the pillow on the left is made of fabric from India.

Annie is neutral French bed linen, covered the living room walls. “I knew I could bet a lot of things on it and it would go really well,” she says.

Statement decor

Annie (pictured) was first spotted on a reclamation yard and fell in love with the antique doors on display in her living room because the ironwork featured a pelican. The bird is a longstanding symbol of David’s alma mater, Corpus Christi College of Oxford.

A cozy corner

In another corner of the living room, 19th century chairs upholstered with horsehair are in daily use. “The springs are bumpy and should be padded, but I love them for what they are,” says Annie. The curtains are made of Annie’s “Tacite” fabric in graphite, while the 18th century screen was a country house auction find.

Dining room joy

A selection of fabrics from Annie’s is available in the formal dining area Linen union Collection includes 19th century French chairs.

“I love bright red dining rooms,” says Annie, who works for Emperor’s silk, done with Clear Chalk Paint® wax, for her. “The color suits everyone.” The dining table leg was coated in Old purple.

Hand painted table

The dining room’s striped tabletop is real proof that you can make it up to you time and time again. After drawing a striped design that she wasn’t entirely in love with, Annie cut open the paper, arranged the elements in different directions, and happily copied the more revealing result. The candelabra consists of a repurposed chandelier.

Nice backsplash

In the kitchen, neutral built-in fittings go wonderfully with the Lacanche series and the farmer’s sink. They also have the backsplash – an original mural by Annie – sing. “I wanted it to be upbeat, unkitchenette, and fun,” she says of the design.

Magnificent garden room

During the pandemic, the sun-drenched extension of the kitchen became Annie’s makeshift studio sketching on the intentionally mismatched chairs. “I love color combinations,” she says. “It’s a way to have something happy and interesting.”

Next to the garden room, this charming seating area is anchored by a French carved sofa and a whimsical gallery wall. The artwork is all vintage and has come from junk shops over the years, with the exception of the drawing on the left. This piece was created by Annie’s son and the company’s creative director, Felix.

Staircase showstopper

What could easily have been a dark and forgotten passage to the garden room received the full Annie Sloan treatment with a variety of cheerful hues. “It kind of makes the house!” She says.

Quiet bedrooms

In the master bedroom, the couple created a calming atmosphere with deep shades and DIY projects. David built the headboard from salvaged panels bought on reclamation yards, while Annie turned a pair of “blingy” peacock lamps into a much more subdued set. The duvet is made from Annie’s Linen Union fabric in Emile + graphite.

Quirky washroom

Annie painted the landscape on the bathtub board on a whim. An exquisite piece of vintage crewel work represents the shower curtain, while copper vessels line the windowsill.
