Rajkot: The Rajkot City Court sentenced him to one month in prison for convicting the owner of a Gruh Udhyog of selling unsafe food and running the business without a license. The Food Safety and Standards Act agency also fined three other establishments, including Khadi Bhandar, after finding their products to be of poor quality.
According to a statement from the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), officials from the Ministry of Health had collected samples of coconut laddu from Om Gruh Udhyog in October 2015. The candy was declared unsafe to eat by the food analysts because it contained more than the permissible amount of tartrazine dye, which is used to give food a yellow hue.
The local court sentenced owner Hiralal Rochvani to a month’s imprisonment on June 30 and fined Rs 2,500 for selling unsafe food and running a business without a license.
In another case, more than acceptable iodine was found in the refined iodized salt sold by Taj Salt Suppliers. The court found Akbarali Rajani, the owner of the retailer, wholesaler Deepak Meghani and producer Koteshwar Chemfood responsible for the crime and fined the trio to Rs 1.25 lakh.
